Scripture tells us, The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18). But often when we are hurting, it can be hard to go to God, because we wonder why He allowed these things to happen.
That was the case for a listener who recently called in to Heart to Heart with Mother Miriam. Her young son died after open-heart surgery, and she wondered why her prayers were not heard, and why the Lord allowed such a thing to happen. Mother Miriam suggested an approachable and honest prayer for her to offer as she grieved the loss of her son, saying:
“A novena you could do is a novena to Our Lady of Sorrows. Her feast day, which is my feast day, is September 15th. You know, the angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her she would bear a son, but she wasn’t simply going to bear a son who was going to give His life for the world. A sword would pierce her heart also. And you as a mother, dear one, have had your heart pierced.
Mary gave her son willingly, though it didn’t lessen the pain. But she freely gave Him for God, and she trusted God. This way you can do the same. Come to God and say:
‘Lord, I don’t know what your purpose is, but I know your ways are perfect. I know your love is perfect, and I do surrender to your will, and I thank you for it. Help me to surrender as your Blessed Mother did. Help me to follow her example. Help me to say to you, not my will, Lord, but Thine be done. Help me to say, as Mary did, that I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to Thy word. ‘
