When you’ve been away from the Church, whether for a few months or a few decades, the prospect of returning can be intimidating. Maybe you don’t remember how to go to Confession, maybe the thought of confessing years worth of sins is overwhelming, maybe you’re worried because you still struggle with certain sins.
Recently on Heart to Heart with Mother Miriam a listener named Julia called in who wanted to return to the Church after decades away, but had all the fears listed above and more. Mother Miriam gave her encouragement and direction to help put her mind at ease so she could follow the promptings of God and return to the Church of her upbringing. If you need a little extra push to come back home, Mother Miriam’s words are for you too!
“When we sin, or when we are tempted, there is only one person who would keep us from God. And it’s not God. The more we fall, the more God wants us to run to Him, because He is the way of forgiveness. Only the Enemy wants us to feel bad enough, and sick enough, and down enough, and guilty enough to not go. God wants His children to run to His open arms. He can’t wait to forgive us.
Go to a good priest, and say to him, ‘Father, I’ve been away from the Church for over 20 years. I haven’t been to Confession for over 20 years. I really would like to come home, but I need help. I don’t know how to make such a Confession. I don’t even know how to tell you all my sins. I cringe at the thought of it. Can you help me?’
And a good priest will sit down with you, and he’ll say, ‘Just go ahead and tell me. And if you don’t know what to tell me, I’ll ask you questions to help you.’ A good priest will help you do that.”
