We all have times of worry, fear, or anxiety when it’s hard to get out of our own heads. We replay a conversation or scenario over in our heads, thinking about mistakes we made or things we could have done better, or worrying about what might happen in the future. Recently on The Phil Sandoval Show, Phil shared his go-to prayer for times when the negative thoughts are swirling around in his mind. He said:
“When I get into places like that in my own head, when I get into that fearful space in my own head, I go to two prayers. The Suscipe Prayer is one of them. It’s a prayer by St. Ignatius of Loyola, and it’s a beautiful prayer that helps me to focus on what’s really important – which is the grace that God gives me every day.
If you took the lines of this simple prayer, you could ponder these lines for the next week, at a minimum.
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding,
and my entire will,
all I have and call my own.
You have given it all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.
Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace,
that is enough for me.
I love the awareness that St. Ignatius had. He was aware that God have him all his capabilities. That’s an important aspect of our lives, when we become aware of how many gifts that we have been given. How blessed we are to have the things that we have – even if there are very few things. There’s a humility in that, in the sense that I need to be grateful for the gifts I’ve been given.”
