Lent is upon us, and you may be looking for a way to go deeper in your spiritual life, or maybe you’re just looking for something to pass the time since you gave up social media. Either way, there are a number of apps out there that you can download to your smartphone or tablet to make the most of this holy season.
Daily Lenten Scripture Reading Challenge: A part of the EWTN app, this challenge will help you to read all four Gospels in 40 days, by pulling up a playlist with each day’s reading assignment, starting with the Gospel of Mark. The Gospel of Mark is available on the free version, while all four Gospels are available on the paid version of the app.
Lentsanity: This app from FOCUS (the Fellowship of Catholic University Students) offers reminders to abstain from meat each Friday and “The Daily Dose” – a daily thoughts and resources to aid your Lenten journey. Also, their Meat Police: The Lenten Authorities video is highly entertaining.
Daily Lenten Reflections with Cardinal Dolan: Another app from EWTN, this offers a short video reflection from Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York. You can even set a reminder so you don’t miss a day! This app is currently only available for Android devices, but is expected to be available on the iTunes store soon.
Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl: CRS Rice Bowls are a tradition in many Catholic homes, and a great reminder of the need to give to the poor. The CRS Rice Bowl app offers several features, such as prayerful reflections for each day in Lent, a customizable tool to set Lenten sacrifice goal and track progress towards its achievement, meatless recipes for Fridays and stories of people who benefit from prayers and almsgiving to CRS Rice Bowl.
