The Vatican officially confirmed today that the canonizations of Blessed Popes John Paul II and John XXIII will take place on April 27, 2014 – Divine Mercy Sunday.
According to the Vatican, the decision was announced during mid-morning prayer at the ordinary public consistory, made up of cardinals and bishops.
In July, Pope Francis approved the promulgation of a decree and said that the two popes would be canonized together. The canonization date was expected, as Pope Francis had mentioned it in conversation earlier in September. Further, the canonization date is appropriate, as John Paul II established the feast of Divine Mercy in 2001 and died on the eve of Divine Mercy Sunday in 2005.
